PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WMBF) – A family home in Pawleys Island was completely destroyed by fire Saturday morning as Hurricane Matthew brought high winds and heavy rain to the area.
When the first Midway Fire Rescue fire engine arrived at the scene in the 200 block of Atlantic Avenue at about 6:10 a.m., the single-family home was 80 percent involved, according to Chief Doug Eggiman. Houses on either side were threatened, and firefighters worked to save the adjacent houses.
The fire is now out, but there are still hot spots that are currently inaccessible due to wind conditions.
No one was in the building, and Chief Eggiman credits the Pawleys Island Police Department for going door-to-door and getting people out of the area.
