KINGSTREE, SC (WMBF) – An emergency shelter in Kingstree was forced to close Friday due to a problem with rats.

According to Investigator Alex Edwards with the Williamsburg County Sheriff’s Office, the emergency management director was advised of the situation at Kingstree Senior High and had everyone evacuate the building, which took 22 minutes.

Edwards said the 35 people evacuated were moved to another shelter at the Kingstree City Recreation Department, located 375 Nelson Blvd.

He added the county currently has three shelters in place ahead of Hurricane Matthew, which can accommodate around 2,500 individuals. They are located at the rec center, Hemingway High School at 402 S. Main St., in Hemingway, and C.E. Murray High School at 222 C.E. Murray Blvd., in Greeleyville.

Edwards said they currently have 75 people staying at the shelters.
