PAWLEYS ISLAND, SC (WMBF) – Isn’t it ironic? Firefighters Jessica and Shane Kingsford aren’t letting a little hurricane ruin their big day.

The Pawleys Island residents got hitched Thursday at a small ceremony in Pavilion Park in Pawleys Island, just as many residents were evacuating from the area, which is expected to see a storm surge, heavy rainfall, and tropical storm-strength wind from Hurricane Matthew on Saturday.

The Kingsfords moved their wedding day up from Friday because of Hurricane Matthew, and they told their family not to bother coming in.

Shane is a firefighter and Jessica is a volunteer firefighter, so both are staying there through the hurricane, with Shane working to keep the community safe.

The couple hopes to catch a flight to St. Thomas Sunday morning to begin their honeymoon.
