Myrtle Beach records hurricane-strength wind gusts

Track Track

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - On Saturday afternoon, hurricane-strength wind gusts were recorded in the City of Myrtle Beach.

A gust of 74 miles per hour was recorded, which is hurricane-strength.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Matthew made landfall in South Carolina at McClellanville in Charleston County around 11:45 am Saturday morning.

Matthew is moving toward the north-northeast near 12 mph, and this general motion is expected to continue this as we cross the midday period.

The center of Matthew is right along the Myrtle Beach coastline.  It remains a low-end category one sustained winds of 75 mph.

Life-threatening rainfall continues to take place along and north of Matthews path over north eastern South Carolina and much of North Carolina.  Rainfall totals over a foot have been reported so far across Palmetto State.

POTENTIAL IMPACTS

Extremely heavy rain will continue to impact areas in far eastern Southern Carolina into North Carolina.  Storm surge effects are starting to ease as the wind fields ease downward with Matthew as well.  However, strong "backlash" winds are expected to wrap around Matthew this afternoon with very little rainfall.  Those winds could exceed 60 mph and promote additional wind damage and/or power outages.
