FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – A Florence woman won a combined $304,000 playing the South Carolina Education Lottery’s Pick 4 game this week, the largest payout to a single individual in the game’s history.

The winner won by playing her mother’s birthdate, 1-1-4-3, which was drawn on the evening of September 17, according to lottery officials. She played those numbers 30 times.

An SC Education Lottery news release explains how she played to win the historic payout:

“Ten times she played her numbers straight, betting $5 each time to win $250,000.  Twenty times she played her numbers straight/box, betting $1 each time to win $54,000.  She spent $70 on Pick 4 tickets that amounted to a $304,000 payday.”

The winner said that’s been her strategy, and it has been on and off for her for two years, but she was still surprised when she won, and said she even screamed when the numbers were drawn. She even told lottery officials she wasn’t feeling well that day, but something told her to get up and play her numbers.

“It just came across me,” she said. “Now this gives me a chance to help other people.” She said she plans to play with her children’s birth dates next.

For selling the winning tickets, Cruizers on E. Palmetto Street in Florence receives a $3,040 commission.
