HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – An Horry County school resource officer is back at work after being involved in an altercation with a student on Friday that led to his seeking medical attention.
Horry County Police Lt. Raul Denis said Tuesday the SRO was treated and released, and is at work.
Teal Britton, spokesperson for Horry County Schools, said the incident happened at the Horry County Education Center at the end of the school day on Friday. The facility is located at 2694 S.C. 905 in Conway.
According to a Horry County police report, the SRO was breaking up a disturbance as a large group of students were yelling and cursing at him. Eventually, the officer was forced to use pepper spray to break up the crowd.
One student allegedly jumped onto the SRO's back and repeatedly punched him in the head and neck, the report stated. A witness ran over, grabbed the student and pulled him to the ground.
The student, 17 years of age, was arrested and charged with second-degree assault and battery, according to an arrest warrant.
According to the report, the officer was taken to Conway Hospital for treatment.
Britton said Tuesday the incident remains under investigation.
