MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - FEMA awarded the Myrtle Beach Fire Department a grant of $1 million for Staffing for the Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program, according to Myrtle Beach’s City Government Facebook post.

“The goal of SAFER is to enhance the local fire departments' abilities to comply with staffing, response and operational standards established by the National Fire Protection Association,” the post states.

The department will be able to staff nine additional full-time firefighters with the grant.

The $1 million will also allow the department to dispatch more firefighters to emergencies and provide assistance on EMS and ambulance calls.
