Big crowd expected for Sunday's Florence Comic Con

FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - This weekend, more than 7,000 people are expected to flock to our area, and it's all over comics.

The fourth annual Florence Comic Con is happening at the Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology building, and is sponsored by Legends Comics.

Organizers said within the past few years, the event has become something fans want to sink their teeth into.

More than 170 vendors, characters and memorabilia will take over the SIMT building.

This con is expected to draw people not only from our area, but around the state.

Organizers said the secret to the event's success is that there really isn't any type of medium like the con geared towards its audience.

Just four years ago, it brought in 1,500 people. The year after, 3,500 people showed up, and this year more than 7,000 people are expected to pack out the SIMT Building.

"We just did it to see if it would work and the interest was phenomenal. We are one of the bigger cons in South Carolina, and that's pretty cool," said Denny Stevenson with 2016 Florence Comic Con.

The goal is to put Florence on the map.

Organizers said if you have a comic book you would like to get graded, you'll be able to get it done this weekend as well.

"We would like to make this a really big event. I can see it becoming something that one day is hosting 10,000 people, and that would be cool.  We got to grow it. We have done really well and we want the local people to come out. We push it locally because we want them there," Stevenson said

Florence Comic Con 2016 is happening from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Sunday.
