Woman finds her missing special needs tortoise ‘Pizza’ 5 miles from home

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – After a woman lost her special needs tortoise named "Pizza" last week, she said she found him by chance nearly five miles from home after helping rescue a lost dog.

Pizza, an African spurred tortoise with a metabolic bone disease, was adopted by Conway woman Jenny Ward four months ago, according to her Facebook posts. He is very underweight for his age, and cannot survive in the water.

On September 2, Ward posted that Pizza followed her out of the gate and went missing amid Tropical Storm Hermine off Highway 90 near Conway.

Ward feared the worst, and posted to Facebook asking for residents to keep an eye out for the tortoise, in hopes that someone would be able to deliver Pizza back to her.

The next day, Ward posted that while she was out getting missing posters printed for Pizza, she noticed a stray dog along the road. She pulls over to try to rescue the dog, and stays with it as it lays down. Another woman said that she recognized the dog as her neighbor's. With the dog now safe, Ward goes to leave, and happens to see her a tortoise crossing the busy highway.

"I ran throwing my arms in the air to stop the heavy traffic coming at Pizza," Ward posted. "God answered prayer and knew I would wait with that stray dog that took me to the very yard pizza was. Not even close to search area. Just on time to save him from the truck coming right for him. 10 sec later would have been too late. Praise you Lord you are Good. Pizza is home!"

On September 3, Ward posted a photo of herself reunited with her wayward reptile.
