DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – The body of a man who went missing in Lake Robinson in Darlington County on Monday was found on Tuesday afternoon, officials confirmed.
Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee identified the man as Dane Christian Watford, 22, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday in Newberry, according to Hardee.
Tuesday afternoon, rescue crews were still working to find the man who went missing in Lake Robinson in Darlington County on Monday.
At about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, officials confirmed the body was pulled from the lake at Easterling Boat Landing.
The Department of Natural Resources was in charge of the search.
Investigator Tony Spires said an aerial search was conducted on Tuesday morning, and seven divers rotated searching below surface until the man was found.
Spires confirmed the body was recovered 70 yards off the bank in roughly 12-foot deep water.
In addition to DNR, Darlington County's emergency management, fire department and rescue squads, along with Hartsville and Lamar emergency officials, assisted in the search and recovery effort.
The victim's grandfather, Roscoe Watford, said he and many other family members sat and waited during the search. All they had, he added, was hope.
"You don't believe it's going to happen to you," Watford said. "You figure it happens to everybody else and then it hits home and, you know, it's a bad feeling."
He said it made the feeling a little better knowing all of the rescue crews were out searching along with DNR.
"You know you never realize how much people like to help people when something like this happens," Watford said. "It's good. Thank God for them."
He added the water is something the entire family grew up around, before thinking about the last time he was with his grandson.
"We went fishing on the Great Pee Dee River and had a great time camping, and he's always got a smile, and that's the way I've got him in my mind," Watford said.
DNR will continue to investigate the incident.
