MURRELLS INLET, SC (WMBF) – Police say a report of a missing surfer Friday was false.

Emergency crews were called to 1690 N. Waccamaw Drive shortly before 5 p.m. Friday, according to officials at Murrells Inlet Garden City Fire Rescue.

They were responding to reports that a surfer was knocked down by a wave and did not resurface.

Saturday morning Horry County Police confirmed there was never anyone in danger in the water. A possible explanation, according to Lt. Raul Denis, is that a person believed to be missing was actually picked up by family.

There never was a missing surfer, just rumors of one, said Denis. .
