DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) - The Darlington Downtown Revitalization Association will hold a party to kick off Race Week activities downtown from 7 to 9 p.m., on Friday at Liberty Lane.

According to a press release, the event will feature live music by Speak Easy Band of Florence, heavy hors d'oeuvres catered by local businesses and more.

"Darlington is known internationally because of this race. The NASCAR racing tradition really started in the south and ours is one of the oldest tracks. It's just a legacy for NASCAR. So that tradition as well as the tourist dollars that come with it is very important to the city." said Lisa Rock, Director of Economic Development for Darlington.

Two-time NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series National Champion Hal Goodson will attend with his race car. A former NASCAR XFINITY Series drive, Goodson won the Pee Dee Coastal Super Truck Series last season, is a multi-time Super Truck track champion at Dillon Motor Speedway and is also a two-time NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series champion, winning the title in 1995 and 1997, according to information from the DDRA.

Also on hand will be his son Hayes Goodson, who drives the Florence-Darlington Technical College sponsored No. 16 Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Model and the No. 13 Super Truck in the Pee Dee Coastal Super Truck Series. So far this season, Hayes has accumulated two wins, three poles, five top-5 finishes and seven top-10 finishes in only seven starts this season in the Super Truck.

"I mean Darlington has always been a special place. I mean I'd love one day...drivers always talk about wanting to win Daytona, Talladega, Indianapolis... but Darlington, that would be it for me. That would be great." said Hayes Goodson.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Darlington Downtown Revitalization Association and its projects to improve the business climate in Darlington.
