DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - More staff is needed to help meet a state mandate at a jail.
The Darlington County Detention Center said it's always hiring, but getting those extra staff isn't that easy.
Two years ago, state conducted a study of the jail facility and determined it was in need of nine more guards.
According to Sherriff Wayne Byrd, county council said it can't come up with funding to get those all of those extra staff members right now.
As a sign of good faith, the county did find money to add to new staff members to the Darlington County Detention Center.
In total, the sheriff tells me on the funding end 40 grand is needed a piece to get all those guards in place.
"We are always concerned about that, that's a continual problem. Trying to hire and train new people, people leaving our facility has been kind of a training ground for other detention centers because of the low pay," Wayne Byrd Darlington County Sherriff said.
In addition, the sheriff added that a lot of people cut their teeth at his facility and move on to others.
