LATTA, SC (WMBF) – Latta Police Chief Crystal Moore has been suspended from her position for five days, according to town councilman and administrator Jarrett Taylor.

When reach for comment, Moore said: "Sorry, I have no comment right now; maybe in the future, but I can’t right now.”

“The official statement is there is no statement,” Taylor said. “The town does not comment on personal matters.”

Taylor said this suspension does not have anything to do with Moore’s run for Dillon County Sheriff. Moore filed to run as a petition candidate on July 15 after collecting over 1,500 signatures from registered voters.

After 25 years serving with the Latta Police Department, Moore said the town's mayor fired her in 2014 for being openly gay. Still, that didn't stop her, and Moore was eventually rehired by her city.

The acting police chief during Moore’s suspension is Derrick Cartwright, Taylor said.

The heat index will climb to around 100 for most of the afternoon. While most areas will stay dry, a few spots may see a brief afternoon storm.
