Power outage in North Myrtle Beach area affecting thousands

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Approximately 4,700 Horry Electric Cooperative customers were without power Thursday night in the Barefoot area.

The co-op stated the first outage was reported at 8:43 p.m.

Information on Horry Electric's Facebook page stated the cause of the outage at the Barefoot substation was a lightning strike, which damaged an arrestor on the power transformer.

Crews are working to replace the equipment and the process could take as long as two hours.
