CHARLESTON, SC (WMBF) – What happens when you combine an adorable cat with the U.S. beach volleyball team? A viral sensation, of course!

Russell Powell, who is from Galivants Ferry and lives in Charleston, according to her Facebook page, posted video of “Smoosh” captivated by Team USA’s performance, and even batting at the volleyball as it was spiked by Kerri Walsh Jennings during their preliminary round against China Monday.

The video was shared by the NBC Olympics Facebook page and quickly gained over 1.7 million views, over 43,000 likes and reactions, and over 13,000 shares.

"I did not expect this kind of reaction at all!" Powell told WMBF News on Facebook. "The minute Smoosh saw the volleyball game on TV, she jumped up and started batting at the screen. It was amazing how she tracked the ball as it went back and forth, too. It was so cute, especially since she just got her 'summer cut' and looks ridiculous. Here's the best part - Smoosh slept all night in front of the TV, and when I woke up this morning, she was still sitting up there waiting for me to turn the Olympics back on. Needless to say, I think I have an Olympics enthusiast on my hands."

Kerri Walsh Jennings and April Ross didn’t need nine lives to defeat China’s Wang and Yue in two quick sets. Watch video of that game here.

Their next group game against Switzerland takes place on Wednesday. You can watch a livestream of that event here.
