FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - There could be changes to the way you get around.

It’s one that would benefit those who use the public transit system.

The City of Florence and the Pee Dee Regional Transportation Authority are working to secure federal funds to update the downtown hub.

Right now the hub is at the corner of Darlington Street and Irby.

It sits directly beside the gas station located there.

The thought is to take the old car wash and convert it into something more viable for customers.

It was just about a year ago the PDRTA was moved from Baroody Street to avoid all the construction happening downtown.

“We are trying to make a closer to town stopping point where people can get on and off and not have it in the middle of everything. It will also be walking distance to the downtown proper if you will,” Councilman Buddy Brand, City of Florence said.

The PDRTA and the City will need a long term lease to fund the work on the old car wash on the property.

Those details are expected to be hammered out by the September council meeting.
