FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Some students in the Pee Dee have already started the school year, but this time with a twist.

Students at Henry Timrod Elementary School started year-round school on Monday following Florence School District One launching this initiative in an effort to get students engaged and excited about learning.

Along with the new schedule, more time is being given to teachers for professional development days.

“It gives us more time to be creative with our lesson plans and to also have hands-on activities once we are on our three-week intercession," said Michelle McBride, principal at Timrod Elementary School. "We also get more time to brainstorm."

The new modified schedule is even allowing new programs to be offered at the school, which will focus on math, reading and science.

So far, six students have crossed zoning lines to be a part of the year-round schooling.

The district said this new model is not causing too many new resources to have to be brought in.

“Not many changes, but one thing we are looking at is the amount of professional development that's going to take place, the time to plan for that which is going to be excellent," said Lorna McBride, director of education for Florence School District One. "They will have an opportunity so to speak, school will still be in. This is going to help our students who maybe need to accelerate as well as our students who need remediation. I think it's going to be a win-win for everyone."
