NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A pedestrian was struck and killed at the intersection of Highway 17 and Main Street Tuesday in North Myrtle Beach, according to city spokesman Pat Dowling.

Horry County Deputy Coroner Tony Hendrick identified the victim as Frank Dalessandro, 63, of Little River, who was accidentally struck by a vehicle in an alley from Highway 17 on private property. He added the cause of death was multiple traumatic injuries and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. North Myrtle Beach police are investigating.

The car, driven by a 29-year-old Ohio man, was heading north on Highway 17 when it made a right turn into a driveway that leads to a Kroger store, Dowling stated.

“I saw some commotion outside and a guy came in and said some guy just got hit out here,” said Rick Olzer, the manager of Tobacco Market #12, which is next to that driveway.

Olzer went outside to find the scene of a car crash.

“It shook me up," he said. "I’ve never seen anything like that.”

A frequent customer was the victim.

“It’s hard," Olzer said. "You see somebody and it’s a person that you see pretty regularly.”

Olzer said another customer had just left the store when it happened. She came back inside after and described what she witnessed.

“She saw him running and then tripped as the SUV was pulling in and the guy tried to miss him and he couldn’t miss him,” he said.

Olzer described the man as very nice and polite.

"It’s going to be hard for me to think of much more, much else for a while," Olzer said.
