COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WMBF) – Horry County Fire Rescue assisted North Carolina firefighters in battling a church fire Friday night.
HCFR Capt. John Fowler said crews responded to 9871 Swamp Fox Hwy., in Columbus County as mutual aid for the Fair Bluff Fire Department. Additionally, Loris crews were also dispatched, he added.
According to a Google search, Cherry Grove Baptist Church is listed at that address.
Fowler said the church was very involved at 7:10 p.m. He added he did not know if anyone was inside when the fire started.
Whiteville Fire Department Chief David Yergeau said Columbus County dispatch received a call at 6:30 p.m., Friday for the fire. By 9:39 p.m., the blaze was under control.
According to Yergeau, 20 tankers and 100 firefighters from various agencies were on scene to battle the fire. Thousands of gallons of water were used, he added.
No injuries were reported. Yergeau said investigators were on the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
