MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - Starting in just under a week, the Myrtle Beach Speedway will be packed with ‘Stangs' as Mustang Week kicks off.

New for 2016 is an event hoping to jazz up attendance - a huge cornhole tournament.

Organizers are hoping to tap into the massive popularity of the game and bring something new to Mustang Week, the Speedway and the Myrtle Beach area as a whole.

"The whole idea is increase ... the visibility of the speedway and know that there's other events going on besides just racing or just Mustang Week," said Jon Sorman, who is organizing the tournament and owns Coastal Tailgating.

The tournament will run Saturday, July 23 and Sunday, July 24. Sorman said the speedway's entire side courtyard is going to be used.

Entertainment and a band will play on the stage, beer and wine gardens will serve patrons in the grass, and the competitors will be front and center on the ground.

While organizers are hoping to tap into the popularity of Mustang Week, it's really the popularity of the sand bag game that they are excited about bringing to the beach.

The Grand Strand area has been tapping into many unusual sports, and Sorman said it's time to look at cornhole.

"When we started this idea about a year ago, I was thinking about all the events that are going on here in Myrtle Beach,” he said. “We have Quidditch. Some people go, 'What's that? It's being held at the sports complex.' And I'm thinking, 'Why not cornhole?' Many major cities throughout the country are doing cornhole, and Myrtle Beach is behind that."

All of the proceeds will go to a local charity.

“We are reaching out to the Outreach Farm, which is a local foundation that feeds the hungry here in the Grand Strand. They raise cattle and beef and protein for all other non-profit organizations at no cost.”

There will be two-person and single-player tournaments. Cash and prizes are in store for the top 10 teams. To sign up, click here.
