DARLINGTON, SC (WMBF) – The first steps are being taken to help stimulate the economy and bring the community closer together through a big project.

On Tuesday night, Darlington City Council approved the first of two votes needed to purchase land on Lawson Road.

The hope is to build a city recreational center on the 100 acres.

The total land purchase is right around $200,000.

This is a project that some city leaders have been working on for over the past few years.

“Our facilities in Darlington have pretty much done what they were meant to do. We have played a lot of ball on the ball fields here in Darlington. What this will do is bring the community together,” Lee Andrews, Darlington Area Recreational Director said.

It should be noted, this land is located about a mile outside of city limits.

“Sports complexes can be whatever you want them to be. We just want to build one that will serve our community, bring people in to help the economy out,” Andrews said.

The next council meeting is scheduled for next month.

At that time, a second and final vote will be taken on purchasing this land.
