CONWAY, SC (WMBF) – The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers' run to a national championship led to national interest in the university and its baseball team, including the meaning behind that unique moniker
According to a press release from Coastal Carolina University, since the baseball team won the College World Series on June 30, lookups for "chanticleer" on the Merriam-Webster website have spiked, making it a "Trending Now" topic.
Merriam-Webster defines "chanticleer" as a rooster who appeared in various narratives. The CCU team mascot was derived from Chaucer's "Canterbury Tales."
The meaning of the team's mascot isn't the only thing that spiked as a result of CCU's run though its inaugural CWS appearance.
Brent Reser, CCU's social media coordinator, said the university's Facebook page had a reach of 3.3 million during the World Series Finals week.
During that same timeframe, CCU's Instagram account had the strongest growth of any of the college's social outlets, growing by 25 percent or over 2,000 followers, according to Reser.
He added CCU's Twitter account received 2.25 million impressions during the month of June.
