DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Officials with the Darlington County Animal Shelter believed a lightning strike from Monday's strong storms resulted in the deaths of two dogs.
According to shelter director Holley Fambrough, workers arrived on Tuesday and discovered a tree had fallen next to the cat habitat.
Once inside, workers found two dogs dead in their kennels, Fambrough said.
She added a staff member went to open a kennel and received a small shock, which led employees to believe the animals were electrocuted.
Fambrough said the belief is lightning struck somewhere outside and traveled into metal attached to a metallic rafter with wiring that touches both the fences of the kennels.
The two dogs were taken to a veterinarian for a necropsy and shelter officials are awaiting those results.
According to Fambrough, the shelter has about 100 dogs and 130 cats.
