NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – An inmate who reportedly escaped from the North Myrtle Beach Jail Thursday morning was recaptured a short time later.

According to Pat Dowling, spokesperson for the city of North Myrtle Beach, Atticus McNeill Barber was recently arrested as a suspect in connection with multiple burglaries in the Windy Hill area.

On Thursday, Barber, who was reportedly undergoing withdrawal from heroin addiction, started complaining of a medical issue while locked in his cell, according to Dowling.

A jailer took the prisoner out of his cell and put him into the processing area.

The jailer left Barber alone to go into the adjoining dispatch room to call for medical personnel. At that time, a construction worker carrying materials exited through a door leading out of the jail and into the sally port area, which is where patrol vehicles unload prisoners, Dowling said.

Barber reportedly followed the construction worker and was able to get out of the jail and into the sally port.

The port’s doors were open at the time because of another officer was dropping off a new arrestee.

Barber’s escape was around 11:15 a.m., according to Dowling. He was captured in the area of Anne Street at 12:46 p.m.
