MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – Cheers! Myrtle Beach is being called the "drunkest beach town in America" by alcohol blog Vinepair, based on breathalyzer data collected from the BACtrack app last summer.
Users of the app in Myrtle Beach had an average Blood Alcohol Concentration of .117, ahead of Norfolk, VA and Charleston, SC, who came in second and third with average BACs over .1. It is against the law to drive with a BAC above .08 in South Carolina.
The data was collected from June 1 to August 31, 2015, geolocated, then ranked from highest average BAC to lowest, "revealing which beach towns drink the most and which drink the least," according to Vinepair.
Miami, Florida was ranked lowest on the list of 20, with an average BAC of .049. "While it's known as a huge party city, our assumption for the low BAC is that the partygoers are most likely partaking in other substances more closely connected with club culture instead of throwing back a cold one," the blog states.
