MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The FBI explains why having a plan in an active shooter situation can take individuals from victims to survivors.

As hard as it is to imagine ever being in an active shooter situation, the FBI said it’s crucial to think about what to do if someone found themselves in one.

“It’s going to be a terrifying situation for everyone," said FBI Special Agent Robert Chadwick. "It's how you act beyond that that's going to determine whether or not you survive.”

While it's not the FBI's goal to make people feel paranoid, the facts are, from 2000 to now, active shooter situations have become more lethal and increased 200 percent.

As the FBI continues to try and counteract this terrifying trend, they want citizens to do all they can, too.

“In interviewing survivors from many of these tragedies, we know that the survivors are committed to their own survival," Chadwick said. "They have thought about it, they are ready to react versus someone who is going to panic and devolve into a feeling of helplessness.”

Since these shootings can happen anywhere - a school, a place of worship, the work place, even a shopping mall - Chadwick said if it sounds like a gunshot, act immediately.

“If you hear something, just assume that is the worst case," he said. "Far better to be safe than sorry. Just get out. If you can't get back to your car, just leave on foot and keep going."

Chadwick added knowing where the exits are is key, and not just the main exits, but also the side and back ones.

The agent also demonstrated using a belt to disable two different kinds of doors and advised no one stand in front of them because shooters have proven to shoot through them.

Chadwick stressed it's also important to know that even when police arrive, individuals need to stay calm and make sure they are not holding anything that looks like a firearm or weapon.
