LATTA, SC (WMBF) - Latta Police Chief Crystal Moore posted on social media Wednesday morning that she plans to run for Dillon County Sheriff.

In the post, on Facebook, Chief Moore says “it’s time for a change in Dillon County and I feel that I can do a great job with that change.”

She goes on to say she is petitioning for Sheriff of Dillon County and would like her community’s prayers and support.

According to state election regulations, "to be nominated by petition, a candidate must file a nominating petition containing the valid signatures of at least 5% of the active, registered voters in the geographical area the office represents."

For Dillon County Sheriff that amounts to more than 950 signatures by registered voters in the county.

The deadline to file a petition to be a candidate in the general election is July 15 at 12 p.m.

Moore made national headlines in 2014 after saying she was fired as police chief because she is openly gay. She was reinstated as police chief about three months later,

Moore recently reflected on this tumultuous time with WMBF News Reporter Audrey Biesk.
