MURRELLS INLET, SC (WMBF) – Lightning struck the Taqueria las Comadres restaurant in Murrells Inlet Wednesday afternoon, sending three people to the hospital and causing minor injuries to the restaurant owner.

The Murrells Inlet Garden City Fire Department responded to the call at about 12:47 p.m.

The owner of the restaurant at 3040 Highway 17 Business said the strike came through the cooking area vent hood where they were preparing food. Isabel Cruz, the owner, said she had a minor burn on her ear and an abrasion on her elbow.

“We’re working, taking some orders out, and lightning came through the hood and hit – I just hear a big explosion,” Cruz said. “When I turned, I burned a little – my ear, my hair, my arm. Two of my workers are in really bad condition. They have their face and arms all burned. My gosh, I was so scared.

Four people in total were affected by the strike, and three people were sent to the hospital, according to the Murrells Inlet Garden City Fire Department.
