DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Come January, the citizens of Darlington County will have a new sheriff.

Challenger Tony Chavis, with 53 percent of the vote, defeated incumbent Wayne Byrd, with 47 percent, in Tuesday's Democratic primary.

According to unofficial results, Chavis had 5,054 votes to Byrd’s 4,506.

An excited Chavis thanked the residents of Darlington County, who came out in stormy weather to cast their votes.

“I want to thank all of the citizens who came out in the rain, in the thunder and in the lighting and said, ‘Enough’s enough,’ and they are ready for a change,” Chavis said.

Byrd, who was first elected to sheriff in 2009, said, “it’s probably been the best job I’ve ever had.”

“The people made their choice and come January, they’ll have a new sheriff,” Byrd said.
