GEORGETOWN COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – The body of a 75-year-old man from Florida was recovered Monday afternoon after he went missing while swimming in the Intracoastal Waterway in Georgetown County.

According to a press release from the Georgetown County Coroner’s Office, the Department of Natural Resources’ dive team recovered the body of George Wharff at 1:53 p.m.

The victim was traveling up the Intracoastal Waterway with his wife and another couple, the release stated. The group anchored their boat on Sunday and Wharff reportedly dove into the water to cool off.

According to the others on the boat, the victim surfaced once before going back under the water and not coming back up again. His body was recovered not far from where he was last seen, the release stated.

There were no signs of trauma to the body. The release stated an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday to confirm drowning as the cause of death.
