HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A man with a drone was able to provide assistance to fire crews at the scene of a small brush fire off International Drive Sunday night.

The three-acre brush fire started in the middle of the woods off International Drive, and Horry County Fire Rescue Crews stood by while the SC Forestry Commission put a line around it to prevent it spreading further, according to Horry County Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Brian VanAernem.

Keenan Ford was in the area, and offered to take his drone up to show the fire command the fire from above and survey the scene, VanAernem said. The fire commanders allowed him to take the drone up to show them the fire.

VanAernem said that civilians should not seek out the fire scenes, and should always ask officials before sending out drones. Aircraft will respond to some fire scenes, and a drone could interfere with the aircraft’s operation.
