Local media outlets report a shark bit the left heel of a 36-year-old woman Saturday while she was on her surf board. Folly Beach Public Safety officials say the woman was taken to a local hospital with minimal blood loss.

HARTSVILLE, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina man is sentenced to life in prison for fatally shooting a toddler in the chest. Local media outlets report Timothy Sanders of Hartsville was sentenced Friday after pleading guilty to murder for the December 2013 death of 21-month-old Madison Dolford.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Political strategist Trav Robertson is the new leader of the South Carolina Democratic Party. Media outlets report Robertson was elected chairman at the party's convention Saturday with 66 percent of delegates' votes.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - A school district in South Carolina has fired a private security firm after an officer twice pepper sprayed a high school student. Orangeburg 5 spokesman Bill Clark said Friday the district ended its contract with DTH Protective Services. He says officers employed in schools are supposed to de-escalate situations, not cause disruptions.
