NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The total number of arrests in North Myrtle Beach increased over last year during both Harley Bike Week and Memorial Day Bikefest this year, and more people were arrested during the Harley event than Bikefest weekend, the city reports.

During Bikefest 2016, from May 26 to 30, the number of tickets, warnings, motorcycle accidents, and total calls for service all decreased over the same period last year in North Myrtle Beach, according to preliminary statistics released Monday by the city. However, arrests rose from 47 in 2015 to 66 in 2016, and traffic accidents increased from 22 to 32.

In 2016, there were more traffic accidents, motorcycle accidents, tickets, and arrests during Harley Week, from May 16 to 22, 2016 in North Myrtle Beach, than the same period in 2015. Warnings and overall calls for service deceased between the years. There were 48 arrests in 2015 compared to 70 in 2016.

The City of North Myrtle Beach has been tracking these statistics over a 6-day period for the Harley Bike Week, and over a 4-day period for Memorial Day Bikefest, since 2006. These statistics include all visitors and all residence for these time frames, and are not limited to Harley or Bikefest participants, the news release notes.

Final statistics are forthcoming, but they will be very close to the numbers provided Monday, the release states.
