Chants to play for Big South Championship

LEXINGTON – For the 19th time in this, the 27th Big South Tournament, Coastal Carolina will play for the league title after the 17th-ranked Chanticleers defeated #3 seed Longwood, 5-1, Friday morning in the Big South semifinals. Coastal improves to 43-15 and Longwood ends its season with a 32-27 mark.

Coastal Carolina, which has 13 tournament championships, will face #7 Liberty in a winner-take-all championship game on Saturday at noon. The Flames beat #8 Radford 11-10 to advance in the semifinals. The championship game will be broadcast on ESPNU.

Leading the Chanticleers versus Lancers were Zach Remillard, who was 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Zack Hopeck (3-2), who only allowed four hits and one run over 5.1 to pick up the win. Seth Lancaster was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two RBI.

Bobby Holmes retired 11 of the 12 batters he faced over the final 3.2 innings, allowing one hit in the ninth, to earn his second save of the season.

    Traffic congestion is being reported on several spots along Highway 17 and Highway 17 Bypass from Surfside Beach to Georgetown as the total solar eclipse draws nearer. An alert from the South Carolina Department of Transportation states that US 17 southbound between the Garden City Connector and Indigo Club Drive is down to an average speed of just 7 miles per hour, for a length of about 9 miles.
