FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) – Two men were arrested for armed robbery after police stopped their car early Thursday morning and recognized two guns that appeared to have been used in a robbery earlier in the week.
At about 4:48 a.m. Thursday, a Florence Police officer noticed two men sitting in a vehicle in an area along Waverly Avenue, and thought it was suspicious, according to Major Carlos Raines. Those two men were later identified as 21-year-old Devan Bashan Short and 23-year-old Davis Xzavion Pight II.
The officer approached the vehicle and saw two guns inside, and after checking further, officers found a total of four guns.
Short initially gave officers a false identification, but was later properly identified.
Upon further investigation, two of the weapons in the vehicle looked like weapons used in the robbery of the Red Roof Inn on David McLeod Boulevard at about 1 a.m. Tuesday. Short and Pight also matched the descriptions of the two suspects wanted in the robbery, and were later positively identified.
During that robbery, a cashier was held up at gunpoint. Surveillance video showed the suspect pointing handguns art the victim.
Short also had outstanding warrants for an incident in which he allegedly tried to rob someone at the Colonial Inn. For that incident, he was charged with attempted armed robbery and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.
After being arrested Thursday, Short was charged with: armed robbery, attempted armed robbery, two counts of possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a firearm with obliterated serial number, giving false information to law enforcement, and unlawful carrying of a pistol.
Pight was charged with: possession of a weapon during a violent crime, possession of a firearm with obliterated serial number, possession of ecstasy, attempted armed robbery, and unlawful carrying of a pistol.
Both men were booked into Florence County Detention Center.
