Blood donations desperately needed after recent winter weather

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – The American Red Cross is in need of all types of blood donors throughout the winter to maintain a sufficient blood supply for patients in need. Recent severe winter weather conditions have already depleted that blood supply and caused more than 300 blood drives across 20 states to be canceled.

Donor recruitment director of the Carolina's Blood Services Region, Ryan Corcoran says they can't get blood products in fast enough. "Blood products are being delivered to hospitals as quickly as donations are coming in," said Corcoran.

Blood is needed for emergencies across the country on a daily basis. "Eligible donors are urged to make an appointment to give blood or platelets now and help ensure blood products are available for patients locally, and across the country, including areas severely impacted by winter weather," said Corcoran.

Since January 20 close to 50 blood drives were canceled in both North and South Carolina resulting in over 2,300 blood and platelet donations to go uncollected.

Two year-old Charlie Stephens, an acute lymphoblastic leukemia patient, heavily depends on the American Red Cross to supply blood donations. "I want to help supply blood for someone else, because others have provided for my family," said Charlie's mother, Michelle Stephens.
Close to 14,000 blood and platelet donations are needed on a daily basis to serve the patients at about 2,600 hospitals and transfusion centers across the U.S.
