MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – American Airlines is launching a new nonstop air service route between New York LaGuardia Airport and Myrtle Beach International Airport, scheduled to begin June 4, 2016.

"We are thrilled American Airlines is introducing new service from New York LaGuardia to Myrtle Beach International Airport," stated Pat Apone, director of airports for Horry County Department of Airports. This announcement comes after the airport's recent announcement of last year's record year. Spokesman Kurt Lovell says this is another sign of the airport's growth.
He says it's also a necessary move.
"There's already the demand there, so technically it would be considered an under served market, so we do need more competition."
Debbie Pipp travels to New York several times a year and welcomes the announcement. She hopes the competition between airlines over flights to LaGuardia benefits all travelers in the end.
"Anytime an airline has a lock on an area, I don't think they try very hard," She said. "I think it will be good for Spirit to have some competition."
