Experts warn to prep your home for frigid temperatures

FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Freezing temperatures probably have a lot of you looking for ways to keep the cold out, but there is a safe and dangerous way to fight the frigid temperatures.

The staff at Schofield’s Ace Hardware said it’s very important that you know whether or not your space heater is an indoor unit or outdoor.

Also you need to make sure you are following directions when it comes to usage.

User error while using portable heaters, is something the West Florence Fire Department has seen over the past winters.

“It’s very strongly recommended that you never put a space heater on top of something,” Captain Anthony Fox, West Florence Fire Department said.

Improper use of space heaters isn’t the only reason the fire squad said they get called to homes during frigid months.

“You also want to make sure that if you have a fire in your home, such as a fireplace. You want to make sure that your chimney is operating properly, make sure the flue is working properly and that it’s clean,” Fox said.

Making sure all of your winter heating appliances are functioning properly can also keep you from shelling out thousands of dollars.

“You know, you are talking $3.99 for a faucet cover. It saves you $400 or $500 if your pipes were to burst,” Don Worrell, Schofield’s Ace Hardware said.

The staff at Scofield’s said using weather stripping, outdoor faucet covers and other products can help save you a lot of cash and heartache.
