Blessing by Baby Grace's headstone happening Tuesday

CONWAY, SC (WMBF) - The Horry County Coroner's Office held a blessing for the headstone of the child known as 'Baby Grace' Tuesday.

“She touched so many lives, but she didn’t know it," said Dale Andrews, who helped in the search for Baby Grace with the CUE Center for Missing Persons.

The headstone was placed at the grave of the five-month-old last Wednesday. The $2,000 price tag was paid for by community donations. Coroner Robert Edge said her family couldn't afford the permanent headstone.

“It looks very special even more so because it was the community that came out and did this for her," said Jennifer Garrett, who searched for Baby Grace with the CUE Center for Missing Persons.

Horry County Police Department Chaplain Dennis Williams led the ceremony Tuesday.

“Baby Grace touched all of our hearts," he said. "Even though we’ve never heard her speak, she speaks loudly today.”

The body of ‘Baby Grace’ was found by rescue divers in November in a Socastee creek, three days after her 33-year-old mother, Sarah Toney, allegedly lost her in rushing creek water. A deputy coroner announced confirmed that the manner of death was homicide.

Sarah Toney is charged with homicide by child abuse.
