ORANGEBURG, SC (WMBF) - The Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office is warning residents to be wary of a new wave of lottery scammers hitting the area.
Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said several residents have notified the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office of callers attempting to use the lottery scam to steal monday.
Ravenell said the scammers will state that you have won a large amount of money. However, to receive that money, you must first pay the "insurance" or the taxes on your winnings before it will be sent.
"This is one going around rapidly especially now that the Powerball lottery is over," the sheriff said. "They're using that genuine event as the background for their calls."
If anyone has received a suspicious call and have a question, they can contact the Orangeburg County Sheriff's Office at 803-534-3550 or the South Carolina Education Lottery at 1-803-734-4966
