LUMBERTON, NC (WMBF) – A 48-year-old man died after being shot at Country Side Village in Lumberton early Wednesday morning, according to a news release from Lumberton Police.

At about 3:13 a.m. Wednesday, Lumberton Police responded to the 800 block of Whiteville Road to find Carson Norton shot, the release states. Norton was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police confirm the victim answered a knock at the door, and was shot while shutting the door on the suspect. A bullet hole remains on the front door of Norton's trailer.

Neighbors say they're on edge after hearing the news.

“It’s just surprised everybody and sort of put the fear in some of them, and a lot of them regret it happened. I do, because he was sort of like a friend to me," described Jimmy White, a neighbor and friend of Norton's.

Lumberton Police are investigating with the assistance of the NC State Bureau of Investigation.

At this time, no suspects or motives are known, police say.

An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday in Lumberton.

Anyone with information on this homicide is asked to call Detective Al Collins at the Lumberton Police Department at 910-671-3845.
