Patient stabs hospital security guard in Hartsville

HARTSVILLE, SC (WMBF) - Hartsville Police and Darlington County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of an assault Monday at Carolina Pines Medical Center. The suspect stabbed a security guard several times, according to the Darlington County Sheriff's Office.

A Darlington County Sheriff's deputy delivered the suspect who was placed under emergency protective custody to the hospital for an evaluation at approximately 4 p.m. The deputy remained present while the process was taking place. After it was determined the patient needed extra care, the deputy left.

According to the DCSO, at 6:41 p.m. Hartsville Police responded to reports of an assault at the hospital in regards to a hospital security guard that was stabbed several times by the suspect. Hartsville Police took the suspect into custody, who was being controlled by hospital staff members. The Darlington County Sheriff's Office guarded the suspect at an undisclosed location.

On Wednesday, the suspect, identified as 21-year-old David Loren Garrity, of Hartsville, was arrested and charged with attempted murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Garrity was booked at the Darlington County Detention Center.

The Hartsville Police Department is investigating the case.
