Florence County lieutenant assigned as Lake City's interim Police Chief

FLORENCE COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Lt. Jeff Johnson, from the Florence County Sheriff's Office, has been assigned to Lake City to be the Interim Police Chief following the resignation of Joseph Cooper.

Lt. Johnson currently works at the FCSO training division. Lake City administrators met with Lt. Johnson last week to see if he would agree to accept this position for a period of at least six months.

Lt. Johnson started as Lake City's Interim Police Chief on Monday. Lake City Police has about 20 police officers; a full staff would be about 24 sworn officers.

Lake City will work out an agreement with FCSO to help pay Lt. Jeff Johnson's salary.

Lake City feels this will help provide an easy transition.

The position for Police Chief has not been posted yet. With Lt. Johnson in place for at least six months, the city can take the time to do an adequate search for police chief and not be rushed, officials said.
