HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – A 54-year-old Scotchman clerk was tied up and robbed by a masked man brandishing a revolver early Friday morning, in an unincorporated area of the county near Myrtle Beach, according to Horry County Police.
Shortly after 3 a.m., HCPD officers responded to the armed robbery at the store at 499 Lake Arrowhead Road, according to a news release from the department. It said police responded in just three minutes.
The clerk reported that the robber forced him to surrender money in both registers, and the money in his wallet. The suspect also left with the victim's iPhone, cigars and cigarettes, according to the report.
The clerk was not injured during the robbery, but police say he was threatened, several times.
According to the report, the suspect was saying things like "I'm going to shoot the [expletive] out of you if you don't hurry up."
The suspect forced the victim to the back office where he had to lie face down. According to police, he tied up the suspect's hands with the computer mouse, and then left.
"I have a house just around the block so a burglary and a robbery is very concerning," Local Steve Wright said.
Wright doesn't just live in the area, he works there too. Mega Fitness is right up the street from the Scotchman.
"We tell the members here at the club since it is 24/7," Wright said, "It's about 90-percent awareness and 10-percent about self defense."
Wright worked in law enforcement and teaches self defense at the gym. He said this is a good time to remind everyone, to always be alert.
"One of the top tips is basically being aware of your circumstances that's one of the biggest things, park in well lit areas, don't take for granted anything when you go shopping that somebody else isn't watching you," Wright said.
The robber is described as a black male, about 6-feet-tall, slim, wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, gloves and a gray mask.
Just about this time last year, an armed robbery happened at the same location.
HCPD is asking that anyone with information about the robbery, Friday, call the Tip Line at 843-915-8477.
