MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – A 78-year-old woman died after being shot during an apparent mugging at the Myrtle Beach Mall, according to the victim's son-in-law and police.
May Davis was shot in the parking lot of the Myrtle Beach Mall Friday afternoon during a mugging, according to her son-in-law, Luther Wells. Lt. Raul Denis with Horry County Police confirmed the woman was shot and later died at a nearby hospital, and HCPD detectives are investigating the case as a homicide.
"We don't have any reason to think that anybody is in danger," Lt. Denis said. "We think that the mall is safe, we think that this area is safe. As far as we can tell, this was a very specific, isolated incident, and the public need not be concerned about safety here."
Wells told WMBF News that his wife was out shopping with Davis, her mother. Davis was waiting in the car in the parking lot while her daughter went into JC Penney to shop. When Davis' daughter came back out to the car, she found Davis slumped over in the car with a pool of blood around her, and her purse had been stolen. Davis would have turned 79 years old tomorrow, Wells said.
"It's a shame you can't go shopping without getting mugged or shot," He said. "Especially a 79 year old woman who couldn't do anything."
Horry County Fire Rescue medics were called to the mall for a cardiac arrest patient, according to Battalion Chief Brian Van Aernem with HCFR. When they arrived on scene, they discovered the apparent gunshot victim and notified Horry County Police.
Police are asking anyone with information about this tragic incident to call their Tip Line at 843-915-8477 (843-915-TIPS).
