'Baby Grace's' cause of death officially ruled drowning

HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - The cause of death of Grace Carlson Santa Cruz has officially been ruled a drowning by the Horry County Coroner's Office. The body of 'Baby Grace' was found by rescue divers on the afternoon of Thursday, November 5, 2015 in a creek in Socastee, two days after her 33-year-old mother allegedly lost her in rushing creek water. A deputy coroner announced that week that the manner of death was homicide.

The autopsy was done at MUSC and Horry County Police are investigating this incident, according to the coroner's office.

Horry County Police upgraded the charges for Sarah Toney, the mother of 5-month-old 'Baby Grace,' to homicide by child abuse, officials confirmed. Bond was denied for Toney at a hearing in November. The judge told Toney her bond will have to be set in circuit court.
