NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) – An 18-year-old man told police he started a fire in the electronics section of a North Myrtle Beach Walmart Tuesday because he was “bored and high on pills,” according to a police report.

Richard Andrew Whidby was arrested at the store on North Highway 17 at about 7 a.m. and charged with arson, the report states.

An employee approached a North Myrtle Beach Police officer and said a man had just set a fire in the electronics section and was still in the store, the report states The officer spoke to Whidby, who initially said he had no knowledge of the fire. After he was positively identified by the employee, Whidby was placed  under arrest.

While en route to the patrol car, Whidby “made excited utterances” such that he set the fire because he was “bored and high on pills,” according to the report. The officer searched Whidby and found a propane torch, and a pair of wire cutters.
