FLORENCE, SC (WMBF) - Heavy rains have fallen since yesterday causing 29 roads to close in 12 counties due to flooding or damage.

East Friendfield Road in Florence County, from Friendfield Road to N. Old Georgetown Road, is closed due to Lynches River flooding over the roadway.

Repairs will begin as soon as favorable weather allows and ground conditions are safe for SCDOT maintenance crews to work. Once the flood water recedes, closed roads will be inspected more thoroughly, prior to reopening to traffic.

SCDOT will continue to carefully watch roadway conditions and take appropriate actions to close roadways as needed to ensure the safety of the traveling public. SCDOT county crews will be on-call throughout the state to respond to possible road flooding and the potential for fallen trees due to soil saturation and high wind gusts.

Christy A. Hall, Interim SCDOT Secretary, advises motorists to use caution. “The average vehicle can be swept away in as a little as 12 inches of moving water,” Hall said.

Additional counties impacted include are Abbeville, Cherokee, Fairfield, Greenville, Greenwood, Lancaster, Laurens, Lexington, Newberry, Saluda and Spartanburg.
