HORRY COUNTY, SC (WMBF) – Panera Bread plans to open a bakery café in the Carolina Forest area, an Horry County official confirmed.
The Panera Bread will be located on Debo Drive, just off Highway 501 near Carolina Forest Drive, confirmed David Schwerd, principal planner for Horry County. The café will be in a stand-alone, 4200-square-foot building adjacent to the shopping strip where Starbucks is currently located. There are also plans to bring a Mod Pizza, another casual dining chain, and a Mattress Firm to that area, Schwerd said.
Plans are to begin construction on the Panera Bread site in the spring of 2016.
Panera Bread is headquartered in the Saint Louis, Missouri area, and has been rated by Zagat as one of the most popular restaurants for eating on the go, and as a best healthy option. It was one of the first restaurants in the industry to voluntarily post calorie information in its company-owned cafes, according to USA Today.
Panera's "bakery-cafes" offer a wide variety of pastries, baked goods, and artisan breads. They are also known for their community outreach, with many locations donating unsold baked goods to local charities after closing hours.
